Yugoslavia and the European Policy of Great Britain (1938-1941)
Abstract
The article discusses the controversial problems of policy towards Yugoslavia before and during the initial period of the Second World War, including the problem of continuity of the British foreign policy. The authors conduct a comparative analysis of the positions of modern foreign and domestic researchers and evaluate their arguments on the basis of archival materials and other sources on the topic. The official documents revealed the British foreign policy’ goals and diplomatic methods as there were typical for the position of N. Chamberlain’ and W Churchill’ Governments in relation to Yugoslavia in the framework of the Balkans policy of Great Britain as a whole. To answer the question about its continuity the authors identify the special methods the British diplomacy used from 1938 to 1941. A comprehensive study of the problem gave rise to conclusions about the correlation of domestic political, war-strategic and international factors that influenced British diplomatic activity and the position of the Yugoslav leadership, as well as to determine the reasons for the failure of the policy of “neutralization” of the Balkans and its consequences for the further course of the Second World War.
