The Enemy Image in Kukriniksi Caricatures during the Years of the Great Patriotic War: on the Pages of the “Pravda” Newspaper
Abstract
The article is devoted to the topical in the scientific and socio-political sphere problem of the formation of the enemy image in the Soviet propaganda during the years of the Great Patriotic War. Relaying on the association of artists M. Kupriyanov, P. Krilov, N. Sokolov’s (the Kukriniksi) cartoons which were created and published in the USSR press during the wartime, the author of the article comes to the following conclusion. The graphic heritage of the Kukriniksi from the wartime is a remarkable piece of the enemy image formation. A winning sense of humour and sarcasm, a crucial importance, thoroughness and naturalism in these cartoons create the lucid enemy image which was necessary for soldiers at the forefront of the war and for civilian population behind the lines. All the caricatures published in the "Pravda" newspaper, were analyzed by the parameters such as: the image of the Nazi war criminal, Adolf Hitler and his entourage, the image of the allies of Nazi Germany and French collaborators (A. P. Petain and Laval), evolution the image of the German soldier during the war. On the basis of the analysis identification was made of the main features of the enemy image, graphics, and lexical means of its formation, as well as the propaganda content of the image.
