Pottery from the Settlement Mayma 1 from the Foothills of Altai (Results of Technical and Technological Analysis)
Abstract
The article presents the results of technical and technological analysis of three cultural and chronological groups of ceramics from the multilayer unstratified settlement of Maima 1 located in the foothills of the Russian Altai. From 6 typologically cultural-chronological groups the authors selected for analysis the samples related to a series of successive periods corresponding to the Bolsherechenskaya, Bystryanskaya and Maiminskaya archaeological cultures. The greatest attention was paid to the study of samples of the recently identified Maiminskaya culture. The studies highlighted cultural traditions in the selection of raw materials and the preparation of the pottery paste. It was found that all complexes are characterized by the use of ferruginized material, mostly ductile. The Bolsherechenskaya ceramics has shown insignificant mixture of skills in its making, which was expressed in the simultaneous use of two mineral admixtures — crushed stonе and chamotte. The Bystryanskaya ceramics is characterized by one recipe — clay + crushed sten + organic matter. For the Maiminskaya culture complex there are 2 groups of recipes: with mineral admixture in the form of crushed stonе and without artificially introduced minerals in it. There has been found an insignificant mixture of cultural traditions. Special attention should be paid to the pottery made of low-ductile raw materials, with admixtures typical for mountain areas. Such observations suggest the possibility of migration of the new Maiminskaya culture population to the foothills of the Altai Territory from the mountainous areas of other territories.
