Theoretical and Methodological Approaches to the Study of the State Volost of the South of Western Siberia in the Late 18th — Mid 19th Centuries
Abstract
The peasantry of Siberia has always attracted the attention of both domestic and foreign researchers. This interest is not accidental, because Siberia was an agricultural outskirts of the Russian state, in which the peasantry played an important role in demographic, economic, social, cultural relations. To date, researchers have studied many aspects of the life of the peasantry and Eastern and Western Siberia. However, the often studied reality was reduced to ideological schematism, as a result of which a person with his needs was brought out of its limits. In modern conditions, it is important to use an approach in which the emphasis would be transferred to the person with his needs. In this regard, such an approach as a microhistory aimed at studying the life of the peasantry at the micro level is being updated. The microhistory will allow to carry out a detailed analysis of the events of the past and to reconstruct the life of state peasants within the borders of the Smolensk volost of the Biysk okrug and the Spasskaya volost of Tomsk okrug. In its turn, the theory of modernization will allow to answer the question whether the modernization started in Russia introduced certain changes to the peasant community, how traditional it was and how far the peasants began to get involved in commodity-money relations. In general, the designated theoretical and methodological approaches will reveal the common and the particular in the life of state peasants of the designated volosts.
