Psychological Ensuring of the Negotiating in Hostage-Taking Activities
Abstract
The article reveals the social danger of terrorism and its psychological mechanisms of influence on the human person; presents the characteristic of the negotiation activity and its specificity in law enforcement where national security is of primary importance. This article also defines the role of psychological accompanying of negotiating activities and training of qualified personnel of specialized law enforcement units. The authors include such characteristics as a negotiator as: high stress resistance, observation, fast responses, self-control, intellectual and communicative skills, competencies, the ability to self-control and self-regulation. The article presents the methodological basis for negotiating activities disclosing their psychological specifics at every stage of the negotiations. Realization of tasks on intelligence phase is possible for preparation of a verbal portrait of the offender, speech features which allow preventing possible aggressive manifestation in the future. The main stage is represented by the following psychological methods: solving minor issues that contribute to a successful climate for negotiation; partial agreement with the point of view of the invader; some retreat from the negotiator’s position to increase credibility, and so the final stage is represented by the three main options for the end of negotiations with the criminals, which is the outcome of the negotiations.
