On the Moral Foundations of State Ideology
Abstract
The article is devoted to the survey of the fundamental moral foundations of state ideology. It deals with five fundamental moral grounds (harm, fairness, group membership , authority, sanctity) applied to liberal and conservative ideology.
There are many differences of the point of views between liberals and conservatives concerning great issues of our society, e.g. for instance, euthanasia, abortion, gay-sex marriage and so forth. The author has concluded that liberals build their convictions on the fundamental moral foundations, such as harm and fairness almost completely omitting the group membership, authority, and sanctity. They are open to changes and new experiences, both in personal and political life. Liberals are more concerned about social injustice, demonstrate support for same-sex marriage, abortion and feminist movements. Conservatives rely on five fundamental moral grounds. They regard traditional values as the foundation of society and are afraid that this foundation can be destroyed and with it society itself can be destroyed. Conservatism is most acutely aware of its connection with the "outgoing world" and the most acute sense of the threat associated with the destruction of the traditional foundations of public order reminds people of the desirability and necessity of state institutions.
