Reviews as a Historical Source for the Study of the Region: the Mechanism for the Formation of Information (Based on the Materials of the Steppe Krai the Last Third of the 19th — Early 20th Century)
Abstract
The article, based on archival material and published sources, considers the process of forming information and its publication in the Surveys, published by the statistical committees of the Steppe Krai in the last third of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Since 1870, Reviews began to appear in print, which increased their circulation. In order to orient statistical activities, the Central Statistical Committee developed a "Program of Provincial Statistical Committees", the main provisions of which were taken as a basis for the compilation of "Surveys." As the main types of observation, household censuses were recommended. From the means of statistical research, the settled, household and one-time means were allotted. The main methods of research were expedition and questionnaire methods.
Despite limited activity, the statistical committees of the Steppe region left a large source base. One of the most systematized and valuable sources of studying the history of the region are the "Surveys" of the regions.
The main value of the "Surveys" is that they published material on the history and geography of the region, the population, its economic activities, natural and productive forces, taxes and duties, public amenities, the state of health care, public education, resettlement, trade; there is information about folklore, ethnography, everyday life, customs and customs of various categories of the population, cultural institutions.
