I.P. Falk and P.S. Pallas about the Formation and Functioning of the Russian Border in the South of Western Siberia
Abstract
The article represents the experience of appearance and reconstruction of the views of prominent scientists of the 18th century I.P. Falk and P.S. Pallas regarding the Russian border in the south of Western Siberia. It is shown that the authors' approaches were formed in the light of the absence of a delimited and demarcated border between the Russian Empire and the Dzungar Khanate, then the Ching Empire, and also directly depended on the travel itinerary, the availability or absence of information access for various reasons. The study was methodologically grounded by the “close up” method. Research statements are analyzed in detail in the context of the scientists’ targets and attracted sources. The ideas of the “natural boundary” of I.P. Falk and the “natural border” of P.S. Pallas are described in the context of historical and geographical characteristics of the territories. The author comes to the conclusion that the works of I.P. Falk and P.S. Pallas contributed to the further confirmation in the administrative discourse and among the scientific intelligentsia of a linear approach to the perception of the Russian border, the elements of which were manifested in G.F. Miller’s works.
