The Shantimes Ritual-Funeral Complex of the Final Bronze (Central Kazakhstan)
Abstract
In the study of the Shantimes burial ground (Central Kazakhstan), a ritual funerary stone platform was found in the form of a rectangular trapezium with sides 40x38,5x41x42,5 m, oriented at angles to the sides of the world. A stone mound with a diameter of 15 m with the burial of the child was in the central part. The idea of the conducting of various rituals is confirmed by the system of sacrificial rings and stone platforms associated with the construction, as well as the remains of fireplaces, fixed on the perimeter in the form of burning places during the clearing of which stone scraper, separate bones, including a fragment of the human jaw, were uncovered. Of great interest are the discovered bronze chisel, which has no analogues and a stone altar, the shape of which anticipates the shape of similar functional products of the early Iron Age. The age of the cult-burial complex of the Shantimes burial ground is established by the radiocarbon AMS-date (2762 +/- BP), with calibration interval for sigma 1 (68.3%) is 969-962 (0.059), 933-842 (0.941), sigma 2 (95.4%) — 1001-828 (1.000). Probably, we should take a narrower time interval for sigma 1, which fits in the X - the first half of 9th century BC., marking the finale of the transition from the Bronze Age to the early Iron Age.
