Akinfy Demidov Museum of the Mining History: History of Creation and Current Status
Abstract
This publication describes the history of formation and peculiarities of the activities of one of the largest municipal museums of the Altai Krai — A. Demidov Museum of the Mining History (Zmeinogorsk). The Museum of Zmeinogorsk was opened in a specially constructed building in 1827. It was called to reflect the history and technical state of the local mining industry. Recreated in 1922 the Museum had several departments, the library and collection of archival documents. There is no information about the collections after 1925. In the second half of the 1970s in Zmeinogorsk on a voluntary basis there was created the Museum. On April 27, 1985 “The Museum of the Mining History” as the branch of the Altai Regional Museum of Local Lore was opened in the building on the Shchorsa street, 13. The article analyzes the work of the staff to replenish the Museum Fund; the formation of the library and archives; implementation of exhibition and research projects; the presentation of different forms of culturaleducational activities and development experience of holding of the international, interregional scientificpractical conferences. In 2010, the institution was renamed to “Akinfiy Demidov Museum of the Mining History”. The publication characterizes the features of the modern museum exposition, covering an area of 242,8 square meters and has three main sections: “Geology”; “The Creators of New Technology in Russia”; “Mining Altai in Antiquity and the Middle Ages”. The description is given to the Museum's rarities. It is noted that the activity of the staff of Akinfiy Demidov Museum of the Mining History is of great importance for the preservation, study and propaganda of historical-cultural heritage of the region.
