Historical and Social Topography of the City: Historiographical Review
Abstract
The article considers the problems of social topography in the context of city space. The authors discuss the notion of "social topography". The issues of the city space have always been in the focus of the research, while the research methods may vary. The city space is directly connected with its inhabitants. There are some fixed methods of the infrastructure characteristic for different countries and chronological stages. At the same time social, economic and spiritual needs of the population produce a considerable impact on the city planning. Social topography includes a whole range of research directions: the reconstruction of urban space, the social structure, the class formation, social status and income levels, the type of occupation etc including the level of the data personification. As the social topography is based on spatial aspect, its studying requires using spatial methods and information technologies which allow uniting various groups of information sources and representing the information with the help of the maps. The studies with the use of information technologies are more fundamental , complex productive.
