Dukharyan — the Ritual of a Wine Cup Exchange of the Buryats of the Baikal Region
Abstract
The present article considers the Dukharyan drinking tradition which has not been previously researched in the Buryat ethnographical literature. The tradition involving the exchange of the bowl of wine in the Buryat culture was popular among the Western Buryats of the western coast of Baikal and the Eastern Buryats of the Transbaikalia. The author assumes that wine drinking culture has existed among the Buryat people of the Baikal region since ancient times. It took a special place in the rite practice, played a great role in the socialization of the person and p[resented the complete system of rites, ceremonies and etiquette functions, prohibitions, drinking songs with special characters endowed with controlling functions. This ritual, based on mythological views, strictly regulated the consumption of alcohol, protecting the society from the problems of alchohol consumption and ensured the orderliness of its life. The conclusion is made that appearance of the tradition is determined by the geographical factor and characteristics of the mythological worldview of the Buryat people of the Baikal region.
