Abstract

The article considers socio-cultural situation in East Kazakhstan, the city of Ridder, in the second half of the 1930s. The empirical base of the study was an array of data of the newspaper “Ridder’s Worker” stored in the State Archive of the East Kazakhstan region. The study treated 220 articles from 90 rooms for 1935, 1937, 1939. All the data were formalized and presented in tables. The results of the content analysis lead to following conclusions: socio-cultural situation in Ridder of the second half of the 1930s is characterized by the development of mass art forms (cinema and literature), high activity of theatrical and cultural patronage over the region, as well as the strengthening of the party control in the sphere of culture that led to hardening of the Soviet cultural and ideological norms. More over in the region, at a low level of development were the so-called “middle area of culture”, everyday culture, as well as museum activities and arts. Painting and music, did not receive the mass distribution as well.
