Dynamics of the Number of Burghers in Tomsk in the First Half of the 19th Century
Abstract
The article examines the number of the burghers in the city of Tomsk in the pre-reform period. On the basis of archival materials of the administrative and ecclesiastical censuses the author gives detailed statistical data on the number of middle class in Tomsk. The article deals with the dynamics of the number of middle class in Tomsk indicators, identifies specific trends and patterns, discusses the causes of the changes. It is proved that the number of middle class Tomsk was characterized by a slight tendency to increase. In general, high rates of the burghers in Tomsk are comparable with those on the national scale. The author concludes that the number of the middle class in Tomsk grew primarily due to the mechanical population growth, due to the incompleteness of the colonization process in the region. The main source of replenishment of the petty-bourgeois class was peasants. There was a slight difference in terms of the number of the middle class based on the administrative and ecclesiastical censuses. Orthodox accounting largely underestimated the number of the total urban population since it excluded persons of non-Orthodox denominations. The paper also gives the statistical data on the number of the middle class in the pre-reform period in the cities of the Tomsk region and Tomsk province in a comparative perspective. The consideration is given to a share of burghers among the urban population.
