Trade Relations in the Ethno-Сultural Relationships of the Abkhazians and Karachay in the XVIII–XIXth Centuries
Abstract
The article discusses the trade relations between the Abkhazians and Karachays who since ancient times had close contact with each other, as neighbors. Although trading for these people was not very prestigious occupation and all internal trade was in the hands of Armenians, Georgians and Jews, nevertheless, Abkhazians and Karachay bartered with each other. The basis of economic activities of these people was stock raising and the main commodities in commercial transactions were sheep and goats as an equivalent of money. The Abkhazians and Karachays were trading by products of animal products and crafts. Burqa, homespun cloth, leggings, hats, and weapons were very popular. All these products were locally made, and the Abkhazian and Karachay women reached a certain skills in making them. Hunting trophies and slave trading was the subject of commercial transactions too. Slave trading brought considerable income not only for slave traders, but also for the local feudal lords: they took a fee for each sold slave. In general, extensive trade contacts between the Abkhazians and Karachay contributed to the development of close relations between them and enhancing the mutual enrichment.
