Prismatic Technology of the Stone Splitting in the Early Upper Paleolithic in Altai
Abstract
The paper presents the results obtained from reconstruction of the core splitting technology with the help of the refitting method. The research was made of the Kara- Tenesh site (the Altai Mountains). According to series of radiocarbon dates and analysis of stratigraphy, the age of the site could be attributed to the chronological range of 35 000–42 000 years ago. So, the Kara-Tenesh site should be referred to the Early Upper Paleolithic. The prismatic method (in unidirectional and bilateral variants) based on the refitting, was used during the middle stage of the core splitting. The revealed analogies let the authors state that prismatic technology of stone splitting constitutes the technological range of humans in the Early Upper Paleolithic (layer 3 of the Kara-Tenesh site, layer UP2 of the Kara-Bom site) in the chronological period of 43 000–35 000 BC which continued in the Early Upper Paleolithic in the Altai Mountains.
