The Ore-Carrying Tracts Trajectories from the Kolyvan Plant and the Zmeinogorsky Mine to Barnaul in the Middle of the 18th Century

Abstract

The article describes nature and leading factors in the evolution of the ore-carrying tracks from the Kolyvan plant and the Zmeinogorsk mine to Barnaul in the middle of the 18^th century. The research is based on office documentation and cartographic materials and analyzes land routes used for production purposes. By the middle of the century, communications made to take care of industrial enterprises needs became dominant in the emerging road system of the region. The main factors determining the choice of cargo transportation directions were the length of the route, the presence of settlements, forests and mowing, the number and level of difficulty of river crossings, marshy places, ravines. The author comes to the conclusion that by the end of the 1750s transport routes were determined on the basis of a network of existing country roads, unlike the first years of cabinet management of the Altai metallurgical complex. In the middle of the 18th century two trends on the exploration of ore-carrying tracts coexisted in the actions of the Kolyvano-Voskresenskaya administration: the straightening of paths and the choice of trajectories with a minimum number of river crossings.
