A.P. Umansky’s Archeological Research in Altai (1956–1963)
Abstract
Using new achieve materials, the author focuses on the main directions of archaeological investigation made by a famous Siberian scientist A.P. Umansky at the early stages of his research activities. His participation in the archaeological expedition near the settlement of Bolshaya Rechka headed by M.P. Gryaznov in 1949 played an important role in his professional growth as a historian. He conducted his first independent excavation in 1951 opening four burial mounds of Old Turkic period. In the second half of the 1950‑s — at the beginning of the 1960‑s being an inspector of the department of culture of the Altai Territory executive committee and then an employee of the Altai museum of natural history, he concentrated his great effort on collecting material about ancient monuments of the Altai Territory, protection and inspection of endangered objects, extension of knowledge on regional natural history. The materials of the “ducal” burial in Tugozvonovo at the Charysh river, the excavation of the archaeological complex in the area of Razdumye at the Ob river, Andronovo burial ground of Kytmanovo at the Chumysh river and other monuments were greatly prominent. In this period A.P. Umansky turned into one of the most active and authoritative investigators of the archaeology of the Altai Territory.
