Problems of Linguistic-Archaeological and Paleogenetic Identification of the Minoans of the Neopalatial Period

Abstract
This article addresses issues related to the historical and cultural identification of the Minoans of the Neopalatial period. Based on archaeological, paleogenetic, and linguistic-archaeological evidence, an analysis was conducted of the possible connections between the Eteocretans and other peoples. It was shown that the Indo-Aryans were the closest to them, and that certain toponymic and anthroponymic markers may be etymologically interpreted on the basis of Sanskrit lexemes. Similarities were also identified between some traditions of Minoan and Vedic cultures. Texts written in Linear A can be interpreted using Sanskrit lexemes. The proposed endoethnonym of the Eteocretans, Vianites, may be interpreted as “the greatest" derived from a royal title, signifying the principal or ruling people of Crete. The island’s name itself may derive from words related to Sanskrit, meaning either “crown" in reference to its orography, or “heart" reflecting its central position within the Minoan thalassocracy.
