Abstract
Historical scholarship pays little attention to daily life in pre-revolutionary educational institutions. At the same time, this topic can help in modern education. The most important components of daily life are the material world and the household structure. They constitute, in fact, the space of daily life in which its action unfolds. Things in daily life carry a certain semantic content, and in addition to their main functions, they have one or another symbolic meaning. In the context of this topic, there is the material world of gymnasiums and progymnasiums (junior gymnasium) and the material world of students. The construction of buildings is also an important economic marker. In the course of the work we managed to find such sources as the inventory register of M.F. Budkevich Barnaul Women's Gymnasium. Furniture items such as chairs, tables, benches can be noted. The boards were used both wooden and linoleum. Religion was present in the material world: so there were icons in the offices. The hallway space was occupied by a mirror and hangers. It is possible to note the serious impact of modernization associated with the development of capitalism on the material world. The diverse material world required certain economic investments. Thus, it is important to study the material world and the household structure of gymnasiums and gymnasiums of the Tomsk Province in the second half of the 19th — Early 20th century.
