Abstract
The study of anthropological materials from the population of the Srostki culture of the Upper Priobye region (1940s-1990s) reflects key stages in the development of Russian anthropology and archaeology. Early research focused on the analysis of burial complexes and the collection of primary data. In the 1940s, G.F. Debets presented the first analysis of craniometric indicators, laying the foundation for subsequent studies. During the 1950s and 1960s, attention shifted to the study of individual series, which contributed to the development of craniological research.
In the 1970s and 1980s, a comprehensive analysis of anthropological materials began, encompassing both craniometric studies and investigations of the ethnoge-netic connections of the population (T.A. Chikisheva, A.R. Kim). These studies expanded knowledge of migration, population admixture, and contacts with other regional groups.
By the 1990s, the accumulated materials made it possible to reconstruct the main stages in the formation of the population’s anthropological profile; however, questions regarding its origins and interactions remained the subject of debate. This article systematizes the stages of research on anthropological materials of the Srostki culture, analyzes the contributions of leading scholars, and traces the development of scientific approaches in Russian anthropology in the second half of the twentieth century.
