Abstract
This article introduces, for the first time, materials from field collections in the Altai Territory, which include ceramic assemblages of the Altai variant of the Kulay culture. These materials have long remained in the storage facilities of various museums and, until now, have been largely unknown to the wider scholarly community. The article provides descriptions of the site locations and, where possible, the ecological and physico-geographical context of the monuments, as most of these sites have now been significantly altered or destroyed due to both natural and anthropogenic factors. A preliminary cultural and chronological interpretation of the published finds, represented by ceramic fragments, is offered. All published materials belong to the Fomino phase of the Altai variant of the Kulay culture and are dated to the 2nd — first half of the 4th century CE. Based on the occurrence and distribution of the ornamental motif known as the “snake,” a hypothesis is proposed regarding one aspect of the social organization of the ancient population.
