The Composition of the Population of the Church Parishes of the Barnaul Spiritual Government in the First Half of the 19th Century
Abstract
The parish was a community of people belonging to a particular Church. It included not only followers of the official Orthodox Church, but also representatives of other faiths living in the parish and the clergy had to register them in their documents. The main sources containing the most complete information about the the composition of the population of church parishes, are confessional and clerical statements. The chronological scope of work are determined by the safety of sources (confessional statements and clerics statements of the 18th century are preserved in single copies), and changes in the class structure of the society in the second half of the 19th century. The population of the parishes was distributed into categories. The bulk of the population were peasants, the second largest category was constituted by craftsmen. During the first half of the 19th century the population change in different categories of the population was caused mainly by the expansion of the territory of Barnaul spiritual government to the South and South-East, where the predominance of the peasant population was not so large. The study showed the high potential of the sources used and the prospects of their use in further expanded research.
