Abstract
This study examines the memoirs of the lieutenant of the Asian Division, Baron R.F. von Ungern-Sternberg N.V. Smigelsky, in order to identify the features of reflecting the activities of the Asian Division, which differ from the information provided by other memoirists, participants of the military unit. The developments of the researchers of the topic are considered. For comparative analysis, problems are identified in which the memoirist's representation of events is compared with the interpretations of other participants and researchers. An attempt is being made to reconstruct the biography of the memoirist on the basis of information both reflected in the source under consideration and in the materials of the Russian State Military Archive (RGVA), which contains documentation of white military units. As the results of the study, differences in interpretations are established in comparison with other memoirists, the absence of an attempt to analyze the text of memoirs, explained by the original purpose of the author, which is to present the "true truth", and the emphasis is placed on the presence in the memoirs of information about the activities of the Asian Division, which is not reflected in other sources on the topic. The prospects of considering the topic of the Asian Division's activities using this source are outlined.
