Archaeological Exploration Work of M.P. Gryaznov in the Territory of Barnaul-Biysk Priobye in the 1920s
Abstract
Nowadays, it is important to analyze the activities of predecessors in the formation of a cultural and chronological concept of studying the history of the peoples who lived in antiquity and the Middle Ages in the southern part of the Upper Priobye. For this, it is important to consider one of the initial stages in the formation of the source base and the methodological approaches. That stage falls on the 1920s and is closely associated with the works of Mikhail Petrovich Gryaznov, an outstanding archaeologist of the Soviet period. The article shows the results of his archaeological reconnaissance, starting from 1925, when the archeologist worked on the expedition of the State Russian Museum under the guidance of S.I. Rudenko. The independent report of the young researcher for 1925, preserved in the Scientific Archive of the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences, can be found, along with other information on the indicated topic. The identified new sites and already known complexes allowed M.P. Gryaznov to present the first systematic sequence of changing cultures of the population living in Altai from the Neolithic period to the “third stage of the iron culture” inclusively. This experience of summarizing the available data laid the foundation for further research that was carried out in the second half of the 1940s and in the 1950s.
