The Confiscation of Church Property in the Territory of the Altai Province in the Early 20s of the 20th Century
Abstract
The article examines Church-state policy of the Soviet government conducted in the early 1920s in Altai. On the basis of archival materials, some of which were first introduced in the scientific revolution, the paper discusses the main features of the exemption of Church property from religious associations of the Altai province after making a series of government resolutions in 1922. The adoption of the decisions on the confiscation of Church property in early 1922 was cautiously welcomed both by priests and ordinary believers. The campaign being carried out in the region was characterized by sluggishness and numerous violations. However, a number of measures taken by the Bolsheviks helped to reassure hostility of the believers toward the Soviet power and the process of seizure of valuables went rather peacefully. A significant role was played by the appropriate agitation of certain clerics calling for the voluntary surrender of Church valuables to the competent commissions. However, the Soviet government managed to solve only part of the initially posed task and, despite the fact that the financial situation of the Church was weakened, the Bolsheviks failed to do away with "managing" clergy even in a single region of the country.
