Metallurgical Plants in the Kolyvan-Voskresensk Mining District: Unrealized Plans for Territorial Expansion in the 1750s
Abstract
This article explores the projects of expanding the network of metallurgic plants in the Kolyvan- Voskresensk mining district. The research is based on documentary and cartographic sources stored in the central and regional archives. After transition of Altai metallurgic plants to the jurisdiction of imperial Cabinet administration, for about 20 years the only silver mining enterprises were Kolyvan-Viskresensk and Barnaul plants which were built by the Demidovs. The lack of forests in the area of polymetallic deposits forced the authorities to seek a place for new businesses away from the Altai mines. The places suggested for building plants in 1750s, included the rivers Bobrovka, Barnaulka, Karakan, Berd and Lower Chenghis. Despite the fact, that no project had been implemented, processed sources allow understanding the development of mining in the south of Western Siberia in the second half of the 18th century. On the basis of cartographic sources of the 1740s– 1750s, the author outlines the places for new enterprises designed by Altai mining experts. This reconstruction is shown on a specially created historical map attached to this article. DOI 10.14258/izvasu(2016)4-15Downloads
