Abstract
Religion was one of the most important factors in pre-revolutionary school life. The Russian Empire was not a secular state, and religion permeated every aspect of its existence. A person’s rights were determined, to a large extent, by their religious affiliation. Religious influence extended throughout the daily life of educational institutions. Gymnasiums and progymnasiums often had their own house churches, and students regularly took part in various church services. Prayer formed an integral part of the daily routine. One of the compulsory subjects in the curriculum at that time was the Law of God, a course devoted to religious and moral instruction. Faith formed the foundation of their entire outlook on life. At the same time, the modernization and development of capitalism that began with the reforms of Alexander II led to the secularization of many aspects of social life. These processes also took place in the provinces. Siberia, owing to its strong merchant class, was in many ways better prepared for the development of capitalism than many other regions. The study examines the nature of religious services and seeks to identify the level of religiosity during this period. Altogether, this provides insights that may contribute to the organization of modern education.
