US Economic Sanctions against China during the Korean War (1950-1953)

Abstract
The article analyzes the effectiveness of economic sanctions imposed by the US government on communist China during the Korean War. The intervention of the People's Republic of China in the inter-Korean conflict on the side of the North and the support of the United States and Western countries of the South led to an increase in economic pressure on China. As a measure of influence, the US gradually introduced financial and trade restrictions, leading to a complete ban on trade with China. It is noted that attempts by American diplomacy to involve other countries in economic sanctions were only partially successful, since the interest of the countries of Western Europe and Southeast Asia in maintaining trade with China did not allow them to impose a comprehensive trade embargo following the example of the United States. Based on documents on US foreign policy and statistics on China's export and import operations, it is concluded that restrictions on imports into China from Western countries did not affect its industrial growth. The ban on the supply of necessary equipment was compensated for by supplies from socialist countries, mainly from the USSR. However, the request of the American public for a tough ideological confrontation with the PRC and support for the Chinese government in Taiwan led to the preservation of the imposed sanctions after the end of the Korean War.
