Abstract
The capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, London, is one of the world’s most renowned and historically rich cities, with widely recognizable symbolism. In the public consciousness, London is consistently associated with its long and eventful history, its evolving role first as a commercial and later as a global financial center, its rich imperial heritage, and its notable ethnic diversity. This article pays particular attention to each of these characteristics. In addition to highlighting the positive aspects of the city’s image, it identifies certain negative elements based on rankings, statistical data, and public opinion surveys. The study arrives at the following conclusions: 1) the contributions of migrants have been and continue to be crucial for London’s contemporary development, its investment attractiveness, and its financial and economic strength; 2) the core image of the British capital remains constant and is largely unaffected by the negative factors outlined in the article. London continues to be one of the world’s most developed and ultramodern megacities.
