Burial Chambers of the Early Scythian Period from the Karban-I Necropolis (Northern Altai)

Abstract
The article presents the analysis and interpretation of the design features of burial chambers of the Northern Altai population in the Early Scythian period based on the results of excavations of a series of objects of the Karban-I site. This complex located in the Chemal District of the Altai Republic was studied in 1989-1990 by an expedition of the Barnaul State Pedagogical Institute (now the Altai State Pedagogical University). It was established that the rite of the nomads who left the necropolis in question is characterized by the construction of stone boxes, mainly without a ceiling, made of four, less often five or six fairly thin slabs. This object is distinguished by the presence of a burial pit with a lining, separated by a structure made of slabs. Analysis of the available materials demonstrate that the tradition of constructing a stone box (not a cist, lining or other similar structures) at the level of the ancient horizon is characteristic of the Altai territory, where it is recorded until the end of the Early Scythian period. The design features of such burial chambers allow us to attribute most of the objects of the Karban-I necropolis to the Biyke archaeological culture.
