Abstract
The article examines in detail A.G. Teplyakov's monograph devoted to the study of the Red Partisan Movement in Eastern Russia during the Civil War (1918-1922). The author analyzes in detail the social, psychological and cultural prerequisites for the emergence of partisan units, highlighting both the motives associated with revolutionary enthusiasm and the desire to protect the ideals of the new government, and the factors determined by the harsh conditions of survival in conditions of total military conflict. The review focuses on a critical examination of Teplyakov's approach to the treatment of the Red partisans: on the one hand, it recognizes their contribution to the fight against the White Guards, while on the other hand, it points to an overemphasis on negative aspects, including violence and looting. Particular attention is paid to the comparison between traditional Soviet historiography, where the role of partisans is often heroized and elevated to the rank of a symbol of selfless defense of the homeland, and Teplyakov's views, which seek to show the more contradictory and sometimes anti-heroic nature of their actions. The author of the review emphasizes the importance of taking into account the contextual factors influencing the behavior of the participants in the conflict and the need to apply multidimensional analysis to understand the real scale and motives of partisan terror.
