“Doctors’ Plot” and the Socio-Political Sentiments of Western Siberian Population in the Context of “Myth of the Jew”

Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of the public reaction of the population of Western Siberia to the "doctors' plot" inspired by the authorities in early 1953. The work examines the main components of the "myth of the Jew" as one of the varieties of the "myth of the enemy" exploited by official state propaganda, traces the relationship between the "everyday antiSemitism" of the population and the repressive policy of the Stalinist regime in the context of the post-war development of the Western Siberian region. Based on archival documents, the socio-political sentiments existing in Western Siberian society, key psycho-emotional reactions associated with the "doctors' plot" and having an anti-Semitic orientation are analyzed. The study found that the population accepted the image of a new “enemy,” and that some citizens, who perceived all representatives of the Jewish population as “enemies,” were guided by a number of stereotypical anti-Semitic ideas about the personal and social qualities of Jews, which manifested itself in discriminatory practices against them; however, the question of the nature of the “doctors’ plot” as an exclusively “anti-Jewish” action remains controversial.
