Migration of Altai Territory Population: Retrospective Analysis
Abstract
The research aims to identify the steady historical trends and structural features of population shift in the Altai Territory, constituting the basic features of modern migration situation in the region. The review of publications concerning population shift is carried out. On the basis of the analysis of scientific research and data of the state statistics, consideration is given to the main characteristics of spatial mobility of the population of the Altai Territory from the second half of the 19th century till 2010.
Migration processes affected the number, age and ethnic structure of the population of the Altai Territory, ethnocultural dynamics and also defined specifics of strategy of adaptation to large-scale transformation in the state, economy and society.
Since 1948 there is a steady outflow of the population to the neighboring regions, more urbanized territories of Western Siberia. An important role in this process was played by the rural and city migration caused by social inequality of country people in comparison with city dwellers. Owing to unevenness of development of Siberian territories and border position, the Altai Territory for a long time keeps its transit role in migration processes as well as the main vectors of population shift. From the second half of the 20th century Altai remains the migration donor for the neighboring regions of Western Siberia.
