Some Issues of Studying Ethnography, History and Archaeology by the West Siberian Department of the Russian Geographical Society in the End of the 19th Century — the Beginning of the 20th Сentury
Abstract
The article is devoted to activity of the West Siberian department of the Russian Geographical Society directed at studying ethnography, history and archaeology of Western Siberia during the pre-revolutionary period. The activity of the department is considered on the basis of the following published sources: "Notes of the West Siberian Department of the Russian Geographical Society" and "Reports of the West Siberian Department of the Russian Geographical Society" which give an idea of ethnographic, historical and archaeological research. The regional department of the Russian Geographical Society formed in 1877 in Omsk, became "the first research organization" in the territory of Western Siberia, up to founding of Imperial Tomsk University in 1888. The greatest attention in the field of ethnography is paid to the native population of Western Siberia, the Siberian foreigners (Kyrgyz and Altaians) and the Old Believers. The works on archaeology had an amateur character and were limited to the account and the superficial description of barrows and ancient settlements. History is presented mostly by research of the resettlement movement to Siberia, and also biographies of outstanding travelers and eminent persons of the department.
