Muhajirun in Karachai-Balkar Environment in the Late 19th — Early 20th Centuries: Causes and Consequences
Abstract
The article is devoted to emigration of the Karachay and Balkar People to the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th — early 20th centuries. Resettlement (in science known as muhajirun) was fraught for the Karachai and Balkar people not only with demographic disasters, but also resulted in the transformation of traditional forms of organization of life and culture. Resettlement of the Karachay and Balkar people in the pre-revolutionary period of the Ottoman Empire began immediately after the Karachai and Balkaria territory entered the Russian Empire and lasted until the beginning of the First World War. The most popular were the waves of migrations of 1880 — beginning of 1890 and 1904–1908. The main reason for emigration of the Karachai-Balkars people was the actions of the Russian government to change the traditional social and political institutions of Highlanders. The historical data revealed new statistics on the number of Karachai and Balkars who moved to the Ottoman Empire. Resettlement of the Karachay and Balkar although did not have a massive character but it is fraught with demographic disasters and led to the transformation of traditional forms of organization of life and culture.
