The Organization of the Audience of Collective and State Farm Theaters in Western-Siberia (1933–1941)
Abstract
The article discusses the activities of the collective and state farm theaters on the organization of the audience of Western Siberia in the period from 1933 to 1941 and the influence of the authorities on the population through these theaters. The state viewed the theaters as one of the means raising the cultural level, but stationary theaters were able to meet the demand of the urban population, so collective and state farm theaters became centers of culture in the village. The theatres were not only a means of cultural education, but also carried political order as through the art of theater was a weapon of the ideological struggle. In this regard, it was necessary to strengthen the contact with the audience, as well as the initiation of new viewers. The article reveals the means and methods by which there was a contact for the theatre — audience. The main measures taken to solve this problem were to increase the number of production performances increasing in the number of productions. The paper shows the dynamics of growth, as theatres and their productions, the data on number of served population in Western Siberia. A variety of incentives, discounts as well as the practice of awarding with free tickets was introduced. All this led to the formation of a new Soviet intelligentsia.
