Research of a Turkic Eenclosure on the Hushuun Denzh-04 Complex in Central Mongolia
Abstract
In August, 2014 the Russian-Mongolian expedition organized by the employees of the Altai and Ulaanbaatar universities conducted archaeological research in the territory of Battsengel somon of the Arkhangai aimag in Mongolia. In the course of work, excavation of a Turkic enclosure on the Hushuun denzh-04 site was carried out. The peculiarity of the studied complex is not only detection of ancient sculptures (“deer” stones) used as construction material, but also unusual constructions recorded in the center of the object. Analogies to the studied enclosure can be found among early medieval sites in Central Asia. The large sizes of the studied complex, and also the use of numerous plates for construction pull this object together with other Turkic enclosures of the 2nd half of the VI — the 1st half of the VII century AD. Continuation of works on the Hushuun denzh-04 site seems promising. Further excavation will allow specifying not only the chronology of the whole complex, but also its purpose. It is important to continue the research of all “deer” stones which were probably taken from the more ancient monument of close proximity
