The Image of “Great Russia” and the Russians in the Work of Knight Guillebert de Lannoy
Abstract
The article examines the image of two medieval Russian cities (Novgorod and Pskov) in the work of the French knight Guillebert de Lannoy who visited them at the beginning of the 15th century. Interest in the subject is due to the need for further development of the imagological problems of French Rossica which has not yet been fully studied (from the point of view of imagology), as well as to the lack of unity in the assessments of de Lannoy’s work in the context of his perception of the Russians in modern historiography. The article shows the features and main motives for the perception of the Russians in this work. The conclusion is drawn that the image of the Russians in Lannoa differs markedly from that of the Russians in later sources: he lacks such traditional stereotypes as drunkenness, ignorance and tyranny. This is because the knight was dealing with free Russian cities that were not absorbed by the Moscow State. Despite the great role of religious consciousness, de Lannoy managed to overcome it in many ways and created in his work a fairly loyal and charming image of “Great Russia” (as he often calls it).
