The Condition of Agriculture of West Siberia during World War I
Abstract
The article considers different aspects of the condition of agriculture in West Siberia during World War I. One of the aspects was connected with the attracting agriculture of the region to supplying food for the armed forces. Another aspect was the status of West Siberia as a deep rear which was not touched by the destructive consequence of military operations. That is why unlike European Russia the extension of sown areas and growth of agricultural production took place in West Siberia. The main restraining factors for the development of agriculture were a large scale of mobilization of able-bodied men to the military service and a sharp deficit of agricultural engineering and equipment in the region. Another problem consisted in a sharp growth of prices of industrial goods. They were 3 times as large as the prices of agricultural production. As a result they were inaccessible for broad layers of rural population in West Siberia. The situation in agriculture was aggravated by natural disaster which collapsed the region during the War. In spite of objective problems and subjective difficulties West Siberia significantly increased its portion in all-Russian volume of agricultural production.
